Groote Schuur Outreach Programme, Straatwerk Day
What does it mean when we speak of the ‘little things’ that matter in life? It was this very question I found myself asking this past weekend as we took an Uber to the Groote Schuur Community Improvement District in Mowbray. It was upon arrival which my question was given some contextual clarity for how we take our lives as students for granted a lot of the time. It wasn’t an issue for us to take an Uber to the District, however for the people we worked with, taking an Uber could mean them having to sacrifice an entire day’s worth of food from the R70 rand they earn cleaning up after us.
I go back to the question of when we speak of such ‘little things’ and how the contextual notion of this phrase contains multiple and many narratives. When I saw what was asked of the individuals that keep our city clean, the ‘little things’ that matter in their lives are the things we take for granted as they clean our streets only for us to pollute it over and over.
And so as students of the Groote Schuur ecosystem around Cape Town, the ‘little’ things in our lives is to give back to those who too are a part of the very same ecosystem, for these individuals who clean the streets for the sustainability of our environment are to be recognized equally within the greater Groote Schuur Ecosystem through the Community Improvement Districts Programme; Staartwerk.
